With the rise of social media, the cosmetic industry has seen an unprecedented boom in popularity. As more people become interested in self-care using skincare, haircare, and makeup products, pharmacists can utilize their positions as drug experts to ensure that the products their patients take are safe and effective for them. Cosmetic companies often employ pharmacists as part of their product development team. They assist with research and development and stable and compatible product formulation. Pharmacists in regulation overlook manufacturing processes to ensure compliance with state and federal safety standards. In the community setting, pharmacists can provide counseling and education about product selection, side effects, and address misinformation that patients may see online. Some pharmacists can also take on additional training to administer cosmetic treatments such as Botox. All in all, pharmacists are uniquely equipped with an expansive knowledge base that opens a variety of opportunities ranging from research and development and regulatory affairs to consumer education and clinician practices. With their expertise, the cosmetic industry is sure to advance as quality products become safer, more effective, and more accessible to the public.
