Pharmacy, as a profession, has a rich and storied history that spans centuries. Understanding the evolution of pharmaceuticals and the tools that have been used in the practice is crucial for pharmacy students. Showcasing vintage pharmacy items and drugs from prior centuries provides a unique perspective and helps foster a deeper appreciation for the profession and its advancements. In PHM 314, Professor Gonzalez and I teach our students about the evolution of pharmacy, where they enjoy the products and stories from the days of quackery to present day innovations. With that said, we decided to bring some of the vintage products back to life and put them on display for students to see and discuss outside of the classroom.
One significant benefit of exposing pharmacy students to these vintage items is the insight they offer into the roots of the field. By examining historical tools such as apothecary jars, mortars and pestles, and other compounding equipment, students gain a tangible connection to the past. This connection helps them appreciate the progress made in pharmaceutical science and technology. Studying vintage drugs allows pharmacy students to grasp the evolution of formulations and therapeutic approaches. Witnessing the transition from ancient herbal remedies to modern pharmaceuticals provides a context for the development of effective and safe medications. Furthermore, understanding the challenges faced by pharmacists in earlier times and how they overcame those challenges, despite their limited resources and knowledge compared to today, emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and adaptability.
Another vital aspect is the opportunity to learn from past mistakes and controversies within the field. Exploring the historical context of certain drugs and medical practices that were once deemed effective but later proven harmful contributes to a well-rounded education. Pharmacy students can gain valuable insights into ethical considerations and the importance of evidence-based practice by examining the successes and failures of their predecessors. Moreover, showcasing vintage pharmacy items creates a bridge between the theoretical knowledge taught in classrooms and its practical application.
