With flu season just around the corner, it’s essential for us to know how to protect ourselves and the people around us. Understanding the importance of vaccinations and adopting preventative measures can help reduce the spread of the virus and keep our communities and loved ones healthier and safe. One of the best ways to do this is by getting vaccinated and encouraging your family members and those around you to do the same. The flu virus is contagious and can lead to serious complications, especially in vulnerable and high risk populations. This year, let's make flu prevention a priority to keep our communities safe and healthy.

Why Get Vaccinated?

  • Prevents illness: It reduces the risk of getting sick, missing school and spreading the virus.

  • Protects high-risk/vulnerable groups: Vaccination is very important for young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes).

  • Herd immunity: When more people get vaccinated, the virus has fewer opportunities to spread, therefore protecting those who can’t get vaccinated.

When to Get Vaccinated?

  • The earlier the better. The CDC recommends that individuals receive their shots during September and October, before flu season peaks.

Simple Steps to Stay Safe:

In addition to getting vaccinated, there are preventative measures that can help reduce the spread of the flu:

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.

  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing

  • Avoid close contact with individuals who are sick. Wear a mask if needed.

  • Stay at home if you are feeling unwell to prevent the spread of the virus.

Encouraging your Family to Get Vaccinated:

Encourage your family and friends to get vaccinated and consult their healthcare provider or pharmacist if they have any questions or concerns. Remember by working together and taking preventive measures, we can all contribute to a healthier and safer flu season. Talk to your family and friends and inform them of the importance of vaccination and about the benefits of getting the flu shot, especially if they fall under the vulnerable/ high risk category. Take action this flu season-get your shot, stay informed and help keep everyone safe.
