Mona Shadded, Pharm.D. Candidate 2027
I’ve had the honor of sitting down with superstar alumna, Dr. Minna Abdelaziz. Minna is currently completing a one-year fellowship in Global Scientific Publications at AbbVie. Appearing at APhA’s Fellowship Roundtable event in January 2024, Minna revisits LIU through this interview with TPN as pharmacy students naturally longed for more.
Minna learned that the pharmaceutical industry was the ideal path for her in her pre-pharmacy days. How? Simply put, by asking questions. She was excited about the potential of a dynamic, riveting career path ahead. Just one thing: she had to figure out what that career path entailed. She found herself constantly asking, “what else is out there?” That is, until she learned of the unconventional path of the pharmaceutical industry. Shortly after, she began exploring this possibility. Before she knew it, she claimed the title of an aspiring industry pharmacist longing for a growth-infused career path. The rest is history.
The interview was edited for length.
Does fellowship make or break a transition into the industry?
Although a fellowship might ease one’s way into industry, it’s not necessary or guaranteed. It’s absolutely possible to transition into the industry through other avenues, such as contracting positions. Regardless, students must remember that one’s professional journey doesn’t always come down to tangible experiences. Despite what your resume may look like, the real question is “are you teachable?” In other words, a fellowship doesn’t necessarily segway into industry, but perseverance certainly does.
What do you focus on in scientific publications at AbbVie? What skills are best suited for someone in your position?
Minna’s position in scientific publications focuses on portraying the right message at the right time. The best person suited for this position is a person who enjoys thinking creatively. Expecting linearity is merely out of the question when it comes to scientific publications.
What are a few pieces of advice you have to offer an aspiring industry pharmacist?
Everything you need to succeed is right in front of you. School itself is a form of professional development. You don’t need to involve yourself in grandiose events to achieve true success. Likewise, never say no to opportunities that will augment your growth and learning. Always keep looking for what’s next. Most importantly, you will see how time flies by, so take it day by day. Enjoy the ride. You’ll be done before you know it.
