Many have heard of the semaglutide brands such as Ozempic injection, or even Zepbound, Wegovy, and Mounjoro, all known to treat Type II Diabetes, and now often used for weight loss. There have been concerns circulating regarding unexpected pregnancies in patients taking Ozempic and oral contraceptives.

It all began with the flood of videos spreading on TikTok and Instagram with the hashtag “#Ozempicbabies”. Many women who were on oral contraceptives shared their experiences regarding how they took Ozempic for weight loss, which unfortunately led to unplanned pregnancies. Many believe that since Ozempic causes a delay in gastric emptying time (GET),  the effectiveness of birth controls may decrease.

Notably, this interaction is theoretical and we are not aware of actual cases that have been documented in the processional literature that support the clinical impact of this interaction.

As healthcare professionals, we need to rely on credible evidence before we can weigh in on any clinical controversy and we certainly should not only rely on posts on social media.
